This is the .max scene file for the 3d Total Treehouse Speed Modeling Challange #05. The scene is basically a general store and restaurant perched on the side of a cliff. The scene has 3 cameras and is lit with mental ray Sun & Sky.

Jungle Speed Modeling Challenge Entry
This weekend I decided to take a break and participate in the Lost Jungle Speed Modeling Challange over at 3dTotal. It was a lot of fun, and I’m pretty proud of my entry. I’ll try to get the finished scene up for you to download before Monday!
EDIT: I fixed the images in the tutorials. I’m counting on you to tell me when stuff’s broken!
ProBoolean Keyhole
Hey everyone!
This week’s movie is in response to a question from the forums- how to create a keyhole in a meshsmoothed object in 3dsMax. It’s actually pretty easy when you’re using ProBooleans! I’ll show you how to model this in without having to get too deep in the mesh topology. It’s a little crude, but effective if there’s not going to be too much viewer focus on your 3d lock.
Meshsmoothed Text
Hey everyone,
This week I’ll be showing you how to create meshsmoothed text in 3dsMax. Ordinarily, this is difficult to do because ordinary extruded text shapes create very complex polygons on the top and bottom of each letter. Thus, turbosmooth has a difficult time handling the smoothing operation. Since chamfering the edges along each 3d letter doesn’t always work, we’ll be using the quadrilateral tessellation in the ProBoolean object in order to resolve those pesky mesh structure problems!
Circular Holes
Hey all!
This is another one of those topics where I’m surprised I haven’t covered it yet. I’ll be showing you how to cut perfectly circular holes (or perfectly ‘any-shaped’ holes) into a turbosmoothed mesh. It’s less focused on keeping tight geometry, and more focused on the basic idea.
We start by taking a spline shape (in this case a circle) and using the cut tool and snaps toggle (with ‘vertex’ enabled) and we cut the circular hole into the target polygon. Once that’s done, it’s up to you what you want to do with the shape!
P.S. I’m stoked by all the comments people are leaving! Thanks for letting me know what you think, and I’m open to more ideas for Monday Movies!
Placing Rivets
This week’s Movie is about how you can place rivets onto your objects in 3d Studio Max. Off the top of my head, there are four different techniques you can use. You can
- position them manually using the 3dsMax gizmos,
- use the Normal Align tool,
- use the Array tool, or
- if the situation is really complicated, you can use the Spacing tool.
I go through all of these tools in this week’s Monday Movie. As always, be sure to leave comments on the post. Let me know if there’s anything that you’d like me to change about the format, or if you have questions that you’d like answered in the form of a video!
Twisted Cable Modeling
In the last section we learned how to fake a cable using materials. But what if you’re going to be getting really close to it and need real geometry? This section shows how to use loft and spline objects to create real cable that can follow a regular spline! It’ll take a long time to render, and can seriously bog down your viewports so make heavy use of display as box once you’re done.

“There are many rendered portraits in a lot of galleries. I was always impressed by the high quality of the MentalRay FastSkin shader and how easy it was to set it up once you understood the basic concept of how skin works. But as I “only” have Cinema 4D, MentalRay is not an option for me. But isn’t it possible to render realistic skin in Cinema 4D? I wanted to find out with this project.”
Making of Elcano
“In this making of I will try to describe the steps of the creation of the Elcano illustration, because it represents an interesting example of 2D and 3D techniques combination. It was a job for El Mundo Magazine. They needed to illustrate an historic event happened on the Juan Sebastian Elcano sailing ship in the 60s.”
Detailed Head Modeling
“When I started learning to model in 3D, one of the first goals that I pursued was to be able to model a human head. So, as many of you did, I spent a lot of time searching the web, reading countless tutorials that covered a wide variety of workflows.”

“I am proudly present this making to all the great artists. La espera was created entirely in Lightwave. At first we used the 9.3 version which had already incorporated significant advances in fast skin y global light, then look at version 9.6 I could see that the improvements were even more notable, therefore rendering was done in this latest version. In the following pictures you can see the modeling process.”
