Hey Everyone,

Time for another tutorial video!  This week I’ll be showing you how to project a spline path onto a surface in order to get the spline to “stick” to an object in 3d Studio Max.  It’s an easy technique, and I’ll show you how it can be useful when placing rivets onto a non-trivial surface.

Meshsmoothed Text

Hey everyone,

This week I’ll be showing you how to create meshsmoothed text in 3dsMax.  Ordinarily, this is difficult to do because ordinary extruded text shapes create very complex polygons on the top and bottom of each letter. Thus, turbosmooth has a difficult time handling the smoothing operation. Since chamfering the edges along each 3d letter doesn’t always work, we’ll be using the quadrilateral tessellation in the ProBoolean object in order to resolve those pesky mesh structure problems!

This week’s show is up!  I’m not feeling well, so it’s a quick one.  We’re looking at how you can create a road in 3dsMax using the spline tool.  What makes this technique special is that we’re UVW mapping the spline so that we can tile a material over the length of the road.  All you need is a simple street texture!

Modeling Core – Part 3

Hey Everyone!

This week’s Monday Movie is part 3 of 4. I’m hoping to make one movie each week discussing what I think are the core modeling methods: primitives modeling, Boolean modeling, spline modeling, and poly Modeling.

In this video I’m talking about how you can create semi-procedural shapes using splines and spline modifiers like Extrude and Lathe. Remember that splines bring us even closer to arbitrary modeling by allowing us to abstract away certain aspects of modeling, while keeping only what’s necessary to be modeled by hand.

“This is a basic tutorial of the Florence Design Academy to understand how to use the SPLINES effectively in the field of Interior/Furniture Design. This tutorial is based only on splines. It is very important that your chair has the correct dimensions, otherwise the rendering with Mental Ray will not be optimal. Let’s begin our tutorial.”

“Before you begin the tutorial you should know that the tutorial will only work perfectly if you model the same car. This will save you a lot of frustration as you progress through each section. The series will walk you through the entire modelling process of the exterior of the vehicle.”
