Hey everyone,

This week I’ll be showing you how to use the submerge (lume) shader in 3dsMax and mental ray. It’s an easy way to make your scenes look like their underwater while harnessing the power of caustics and global illumination. Try these techniques in conjunction with the waterbox we made last week for a really great one-two punch!

Also, you may have noticed that I included a transcript of last week’s video.  I’m going to try adding that in to the mix for the next few weeks to see if people find that useful.  Remember that you can always pass this page through Google Translate to get the transcription in your desired language!

I have found that my paintings turn out the best when I have a good mental image of them before I start painting. This often involves some research. Ideally it is good to have several types reference. One of the first things I do is to think about what elements could be in the painting. Then I try to find good general pictures of those elements.

Caustics through Mental Ray

“Caustics are really great light effects that you can observe in liquids, glass objects and gems. We are able to simulate this effect with 3D Studio Max perfectly. This tutorial about Caustics will work only if you enable “Mental Ray”! (This tutorial was made in Max 8).”

How to Create a Waterfall

“I want to share my work on how to create a Waterfall from 3ds Max Particle System. To start with, set units to meters, and renderer to default scanline renderer. You can download my raw model for the building from here. (3dmax 8 and above). Raw image should look like the image below.”

Making of Orange Bridge

“In this Making Of I would like to mention the reason why this image came to exist, my inspiration behind it and some further information about the scene as whole. Then I would like to present the models themselves, which occupy scene.”

“Welcome to my tutorial on how I painted the landscape/waterscape Desirable thirst. The tutorial works like a walkthrough/step-by-step guide. I will not explain in detail how you should paint the different parts in the painting.”

“I was thinking, for a few days, that the best idea concerning this tutorial would have been to explain the steps, one by one, the conventional way. But after a while i realised that there was probably not much to talk about, as the major interest of the image can be found in the three first steps.”

We will be creating an mystic night scene with rainy atmosphere. Few preprations are required before u start. First baisc step is a concept and where will be the matte paint used? Always start with rough thumbnails. Bring down your thoughts on paper. Scan it if needed.Try to colour them roughly with simple patches of colours considering the atmosphere you want. Once you are happy with the result its time to finalize!

Water Drop

This tutorial will teach you how to create a water drop animation.

Autumn

“After Ben from 3dtotal contacted us, Sebastian and me sat together brainstorming of what Scene we want to create to represent the new Texture CD Vol. 10. Since it was about Plants and Trees, it was near that we did a landscape scene. Sebastian wanted some water in, I wanted leaf’s flying around. At first we started with the main landscape shapes, the position of the water, basically the main scene layout.”

“Fluid dynamics is a branch of physics that uses mathematical equations to describe how things flow. In Fluid Effects, dynamicfluid effects simulate fluid motion by solving fluid dynamics equations at each step of time. The more you increase the container’s resolution, the better, but make sure that there are some logical proportions between your container’s resolution and the container size. (Please see below for the proportional values induced).”
